The Battlefield Course
Afton, OK, USA

The Battlefield at Shangri-La Resort occupies a distinctive setting along the shores of Grand Lake o' the Cherokees in northeastern Oklahoma, where the course's name references both its challenging character and the region's historical significance. The layout takes advantage of the lake's irregular shoreline and the rolling Ozark foothills terrain, creating elevation changes and water features that define the routing. The course serves as the centerpiece of a family-oriented resort that has been a regional destination in the Grand Lake area for decades. The design incorporates native hardwoods and the natural topography of the area, with several holes playing along or near the water's edge. Doglegs and strategic bunkering require thoughtful course management, while the elevation shifts provide both visual interest and tactical variety throughout the round. The property's location in the Grand Lake region means the course benefits from the scenic qualities of northeastern Oklahoma's lake country, with mature trees framing many holes. Shangri-La functions as a full-service resort with lodging, dining, and recreational amenities beyond golf, drawing families and groups to the Grand Lake area. The club maintains a welcoming atmosphere appropriate to its resort character, with the course accessible to resort guests and outside play. The Battlefield represents a significant golf option in a part of Oklahoma better known for lake recreation than championship golf, offering a layout that challenges players while fitting naturally into the resort's broader hospitality mission.
For a Par 3, I thought this was excellent. I don’t want to rate it up with full length courses, but our group loved playing it once. Great shape, about $115 for a Sunday round. Some slope-y greens with a couple erring on the funhouse side. Great for a final round or opening round if you’re playing the other three, 9 hole options at Shangri-La
Get ready to have fun. Great par 3 course with holes ranging from 90 yards to 240 yards wild greens great service. Play 18 at the full size courses and add the battlefield or just play the battlefield it feels like. Full round.
