Sutton Bay sits on the eastern shore of Lake Oahe, a massive Missouri River reservoir in central South Dakota, approximately forty miles north of Pierre. Designed by Australian architect Graham Marsh and opened in the late 1990s, the course occupies a dramatic site where rolling prairie terrain meets the lake's irregular shoreline. The property features significant elevation changes and natural ravines uncommon in this part of the Great Plains, with several holes routed along bluffs that overlook the water. The layout takes advantage of the topography and lake views, incorporating the native grasses and open landscapes characteristic of South Dakota's ranchland. Marsh's design works with the natural contours rather than imposing heavily manufactured features, allowing the wind—a constant presence in this exposed setting—to serve as a primary defense. Multiple holes play directly along the water's edge, while others move through interior valleys and ridgelines.
