STILLWATER COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Stillwater, MN, USA
Designed by Paul N. Coates

Stillwater Country Club sits in the St. Croix River valley of eastern Minnesota, a region known for its rolling terrain and mature hardwood forests. The course was designed by Paul N. Coates, a regional architect active in the upper Midwest during the mid-twentieth century. Coates worked primarily in Minnesota and Wisconsin, creating layouts that typically emphasize strategic bunkering and routing that follows natural land contours rather than extensive earthmoving.
The property reflects the topography common to this part of the St. Croix valley, with elevation changes and tree-lined fairways that require thoughtful course management. Stillwater itself is one of Minnesota's oldest towns, located along the scenic river corridor that forms the border with Wisconsin, and the club has long served as a social and recreational center for the community. The course layout takes advantage of the wooded setting while providing variety in hole length and direction.
Stillwater Country Club operates as a traditional private club, hosting member events and regional amateur competitions typical of established Midwestern country clubs. The routing and design reflect the era of its construction, with greens and fairways shaped to reward accuracy over distance and to integrate naturally with the surrounding landscape. The club maintains its role as a gathering place for local families and golfers who value a classic parkland experience in a historic river town setting.
Reviews
You should definitely play here if you get the chance. Very fun course, just the right amount of quirk, and a lovely 10th hole (volcano!) you'll remember. Stillwater CC is home to one of MN golf's great thinkers, Rick Shefchick (sp?) so be sure to ask if he's around if you get the chance to play. Truly a gift to play this course.
