Sand Creek Golf Course

Sand Creek Golf Course sits on the eastern edge of Idaho Falls, where the high desert landscape of southeastern Idaho meets the agricultural Snake River Plain. Designed by William Francis Bell and opened in the mid-1990s, the course occupies gently rolling terrain with mature cottonwoods and willows defining many holes along seasonal creek corridors that give the property its name. Bell, a prolific Northwest architect who designed dozens of courses across the region during the latter half of the twentieth century, created a layout that balances accessibility for the public golfer with strategic interest through well-placed bunkering and water hazards. The routing takes advantage of the natural drainage patterns, with several holes playing alongside or across the creek beds that can come into play during spring runoff. The relatively flat topography allows for walkable golf, though prevailing winds from the west can significantly affect club selection and strategy. Cottonwood groves provide definition and occasional shelter from the wind, while views extend toward the distant Teton Range on clear days. Sand Creek serves as a municipal facility for Idaho Falls, hosting local tournaments and high school competitions throughout the season. The course reflects Bell's practical approach to public golf design: straightforward holes that reward solid shotmaking without excessive length or artificial difficulty, suited to the region's short growing season and the needs of an everyday public golf operation.
