Royal Porthcawl Course
Porthcawl, Bridgend, Wales

Royal Porthcawl occupies a stretch of linksland on the Bristol Channel coast in South Wales, roughly thirty miles west of Cardiff. The club was established in 1891, with the course laid out initially by Charles Gibson and later refined by Ramsay Hunter. Tom Simpson contributed revisions in the 1930s that shaped much of the routing golfers encounter today. The layout runs along and across natural duneland, with the outward nine moving generally southwest toward the sea and the inward nine returning northeast, creating varied wind angles and strategic demands throughout the round. The course presents classic links characteristics: firm, rumpled fairways, deep pot bunkers, and greens that reward ground approaches and punish imprecise play. Several holes play directly along the shoreline, where the proximity to the water and exposure to prevailing winds test club selection and shot shaping. The par-three fourteenth is frequently noted for its elevated tee and coastal views, while the closing stretch demands accuracy and composure in conditions that can shift quickly. Royal Porthcawl has hosted numerous significant amateur championships, including multiple editions of the British Amateur and the Walker Cup in 1995 and 2014. The club maintains a traditional members' culture, with a clubhouse that reflects its long history in Welsh golf. The course consistently appears in rankings of British and Irish links and is regarded as one of the premier championship venues in Wales.
