Harry S. Colt

Harry S. Colt (1869–1951) was one of the most influential golf course architects of the early 20th century, designing or redesigning over 300 courses worldwide. Born in Highgate, England, and educated at Cambridge—where he captained the university golf team—Colt initially trained as a barrister before turning to course architecture. He became a founder member of the Royal & Ancient Rules of Golf Committee in 1897, establishing his deep involvement in the game's development.

Colt often worked in partnership with Charles Alison and John Morrison, forming Colt, Alison & Morrison Ltd. in 1928. His portfolio spans all six inhabited continents and includes celebrated designs such as Swinley Forest, Sunningdale's New course, and transformative work on Royal Portrush's Dunluce and Royal Liverpool. In North America, his courses include Milwaukee Country Club, Kirtland, and Plum Hollow, which hosted the 1947 PGA Championship. The St. George's Hill Composite, Gullane No. 3, and County Sligo's Colt course further demonstrate his range. Swinley Forest and other Colt designs are often named among the most admired courses in the world.

Colt's designs are distinguished by their strategic subtlety, natural routing, and lasting quality—hallmarks that continue to influence architects today.
