Rockwind Course
Hobbs, NM, USA

Rockwind Community Links occupies an unusual position in American golf as a true links-style course built on reclaimed industrial land in the high desert of southeastern New Mexico. The facility opened in 2010 on the site of a former potash refinery, with the design work led by architect Keith Foster. The routing takes advantage of the flat, windswept terrain characteristic of the region, and the reclamation process created sandy soils and rolling contours that allow for firm, fast playing conditions more typical of seaside links than inland desert courses. The course stretches over 7,700 yards from the championship tees and features wide fairways bordered by native grasses, deep pot bunkers, and large, undulating greens that reward creative ground-game approaches. The wind is a constant factor in Hobbs, often blowing at sustained speeds that significantly affect club selection and strategy. The absence of trees and the open landscape create an aesthetic that references Scottish and Irish links golf, though the surrounding views include oil derricks and industrial infrastructure rather than coastal dunes. Rockwind operates as a public facility and has served as a competitive venue for regional amateur events and collegiate tournaments. The course represents an uncommon example of environmental remediation resulting in a golf facility, transforming industrial property into recreational space. The design emphasizes walkability and strategic options, with multiple teeing grounds that make the course accessible to players of varying abilities while maintaining challenge for accomplished golfers in the persistent West Texas wind conditions.
Have not been in the Hobbs area in years, but at the time this course was the best city course I had ever played. The greens and fairways were in fantastic condition. Very little rough before the desert took over so keeping it straight is a must. A very fun course to play.
Awesome new design Must Play
