This classic parkland course, originally laid out by Donald Ross in the Golden Age, presents a strategic test with tree-lined fairways that favor a precise tee shot and subtly contoured greens that reward thoughtful approach play. While the course itself is not overly long by modern standards, its tight corridors and strategic bunkering demand careful club selection and a commitment to accuracy. A.W. Tillinghast consulted on adjustments early in its history, and more recently, Tom Fazio oversaw a substantial renovation that honored Ross's original vision while subtly modernizing the course for the contemporary game. River Oaks has hosted the U.S. Men's Amateur in 1938 and the Shell Houston Open (now known as the Texas Children’s Houston Open) for several decades and the club continues to attract regional and national amateur events.
