Port Royal Golf Course

Port Royal Golf Course occupies a dramatic clifftop site on Bermuda's south shore in Southampton Parish. Designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1970, the course was built as a public facility by the Bermudian government to complement the island's resort tourism. Jones routed the layout across rugged limestone terrain, taking advantage of natural elevation changes and ocean views that appear on multiple holes. The property sits above pink sand beaches and turquoise water, with the course itself characterized by coral stone outcroppings, native vegetation, and exposure to prevailing winds that can significantly affect play. The par-71 layout measures over 6,800 yards from the championship tees and features several holes that play along or above the coastline. The sixteenth hole, a par three playing across a chasm to a green perched on a promontory, draws particular attention for its clifftop setting and ocean backdrop. The course incorporates Jones's typical design elements including large, contoured greens, strategic bunkering, and forced carries over natural hazards. Fairways often tilt and narrow at landing areas, rewarding accurate placement. Port Royal underwent a comprehensive renovation completed in 2009, with updates to drainage, grassing, and bunker construction while maintaining the original routing and design intent. The course has hosted PGA Grand Slam of Golf events and remains Bermuda's most prominent public golf facility. Its accessibility and setting make it a frequent destination for visiting golfers, and it serves as a venue for local competitive play throughout the year.
