Flynn, the Philadelphia-based designer known for his strategic bunkering and natural routing principles, laid out the original course in the 1920s during his prolific period of work throughout the Mid-Atlantic. Ellis Maples, a North Carolina native who shaped dozens of courses across the state in the mid-twentieth century, later contributed modifications that adapted the layout to evolving maintenance practices and playing standards. Dick Wilson, active during the same postwar period and recognized for his bold contouring and greenside shaping, also left his mark on the design. The routing takes advantage of the region's characteristic flat-to-gently-rolling terrain, with stands of longleaf pine, oak, and other native hardwoods framing the holes. Water features, typical of the coastal plain landscape, come into play on several holes. The greens show the influence of multiple design hands, with some retaining Flynn's subtler undulations and others displaying the more pronounced movement associated with Wilson's work.
