National Golf Club

The Old Course at National Golf Club occupies a dramatic stretch of coastal land on the Mornington Peninsula, approximately 90 kilometers south of Melbourne. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1988, it was the first of three courses developed at the property and quickly established itself as one of Australia's most challenging championship layouts. The routing takes full advantage of the rugged terrain, with holes carved through native tea-tree and coastal scrub, offering views across Bass Strait and the surrounding peninsula landscape. The course is characterized by significant elevation changes and exposed conditions, particularly when southerly winds sweep in from the ocean. Several holes play along ridgelines or drop sharply into valleys, demanding precise club selection and course management. The closing stretch includes a memorable par-three 17th hole that plays downhill toward the water. The Old Course has hosted numerous significant Australian tournaments, including multiple Australian Opens and the World Cup of Golf in 2013. It consistently appears in national and international course rankings and is regarded as a stern test for accomplished players. National Golf Club operates as a private members' club, though the facility welcomes visiting golfers through various access programs.
