INDIANWOOD G & COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Lake Orion, MI, USA
Designed by Bob Cupp, Jerry Pate

Indianwood Golf & Country Club's New Course sits in Lake Orion, Michigan, roughly 40 miles north of Detroit in Oakland County's rolling lake country. Designed by Bob Cupp and Jerry Pate and opened in the late 1980s, the course was built to complement the club's existing Old Course and reflects Cupp's characteristic emphasis on strategic design and natural landform integration. The property occupies terrain typical of southeastern Michigan's glacial landscape, with moderate elevation changes, mature hardwood corridors, and several water features that come into play.
Cupp, who worked extensively with Jack Nicklaus before establishing his own practice, brought a thoughtful approach to routing and green complexes. The New Course layout incorporates varied hole lengths and angles, asking players to manage both distance and placement. The greens feature subtle contours and are often protected by well-positioned bunkering. Pate, the 1982 U.S. Open champion who collaborated on several Cupp projects during this period, contributed a player's perspective to shot values and competitive balance.
Indianwood has hosted numerous regional and state amateur championships over the decades, serving as a respected tournament venue in Michigan golf circles. The club maintains a traditional private country club atmosphere with an active membership drawn largely from the northern Detroit suburbs. Both courses share practice facilities and clubhouse amenities, and the New Course is generally regarded as the more demanding test of the two layouts.

Exceptionally difficult layout. Challenging but fun.
