La Quinta

The Mountain Course at La Quinta Country Club occupies dramatic terrain in the Coachella Valley, where Pete Dye routed holes across natural elevation changes and desert landscape characteristic of the region. Opened in the late 1980s as part of La Quinta's multi-course resort complex, the design takes advantage of the property's varied topography, with holes playing through canyons, across ridgelines, and around natural desert washes. Dye incorporated his signature design elements—railroad ties, pot bunkers, and strategic bunkering—while working with the existing landforms rather than imposing heavily manufactured features. The routing moves through distinct zones of terrain, with several holes playing significantly uphill or downhill and offering views across the valley toward the surrounding mountain ranges. The course presents a contrast to the flatter, more traditional layouts common in the Palm Springs area, requiring golfers to manage uneven lies and judge distances affected by elevation change. Dye's use of native desert vegetation and rock outcroppings gives the course a rugged character compared to the manicured resort aesthetic of many neighboring facilities.
