Morningstar Golf Club

Morningstar Golf Club sits in Parksville on Vancouver Island's east coast, where the mild climate and natural terrain provide favorable conditions for year-round golf. Les Furber designed the course in the late 1980s, routing it through a landscape of Douglas fir and arbutus trees characteristic of the island's Coastal Douglas-fir biogeoclimatic zone. The property features rolling topography with elevation changes that create variety in shot-making and strategic options throughout the round. The layout takes advantage of the natural contours, with holes playing through forested corridors and more open areas that reveal views toward the surrounding mountains. Furber incorporated the existing vegetation and landforms into the design, requiring players to navigate doglegs and manage elevation shifts while considering how the ball will react on sloped fairways and greens. Water features come into play on several holes, adding both visual interest and strategic consequence to approach shots and tee balls. Parksville's location in the rain shadow of Vancouver Island's mountains means the course receives less precipitation than areas on the island's west side, contributing to firm playing conditions during much of the season. The club serves both members and visitors, drawing golfers from the local community as well as those traveling to the Parksville-Qualicum Beach area. The course remains a notable example of Furber's work in British Columbia, where he designed several layouts during the province's golf development boom of the 1980s and 1990s.
