Montauk Downs Course
Montauk, NY, USA

Montauk Downs, carved into the windswept easternmost point of Long Island, presents a stern test shaped by its unique environment. Originally laid out by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in the late 1960s, the course boasts a muscular, parkland feel despite its proximity to the Atlantic. Wide fairways are often deceiving; the ever-present ocean breeze and subtly contoured greens demand respect and a keen understanding of shot trajectory. Jones’s signature bunkering and strategic use of the natural terrain creates both visual appeal and a demanding playing experience where wayward shots are severely penalized. Montauk Downs isn’t known for hosting major championships, but its inherent challenges have long attracted serious golfers seeking a pure test of skill. The course saw a major renovation in the late 20th century by Rees Jones, son of the original architect, bringing some modernization. The club is heavily frequented by locals and visitors alike. It is an especially popular course amongst Wall Street workers looking to hit the links and catch some sun. Beyond the golf, Montauk Downs embodies the rugged spirit of its location. While it may not be mentioned amongst the country's elite courses, it is consistently ranked as one of the top municipal courses in the nation. It remains a true public treasure, offering a demanding yet accessible golf experience that celebrates the raw beauty of Long Island's coastline.

Drove out to play. Worth the trip, challenging layout
Really good track as far as public golf on the East end goes, hard to get tee times in the summer.
