Mill River Golf Course occupies a distinctive setting in O'Leary, in the western region of Prince Edward Island, where the landscape transitions from the island's characteristic red soil farmland to mixed woodland and water features. Designed by Canadian architect Robbie Robinson and opened in 1971, the course was developed as part of a provincial resort initiative to expand golf tourism beyond the island's central and eastern regions. Robinson, who worked extensively across the Maritimes during this era, routed the course to incorporate the natural terrain's elevation changes and integrate the Mill River waterway that gives the facility its name. The layout moves through varied terrain, with holes playing across rolling ground and through corridors of mature trees, particularly spruce and hardwoods native to the region. Water comes into play on several holes where the river and constructed ponds create strategic considerations. The course measures over 6,700 yards from the back tees, providing sufficient length for competitive play while remaining accessible from forward positions. The property's relative isolation in western PEI gives it a quieter, less tourist-heavy atmosphere compared to courses near Charlottetown. Mill River has served as a venue for provincial championships and regional amateur competitions, functioning as one of the primary tournament sites in western Prince Edward Island.
