The course favors players who can shape the ball, with doglegs bending both ways and subtly contoured greens that reward strategic approach play. There are blind shots that ask the golfer to trust the yardage and commit. The club hosted the 1914 U.S. Open, a testament to its early prominence. Later, in 1928, the club brought in Donald Ross to make improvements. The course further benefited from a masterful renovation by Arthur Hills in the 1990s, adding length and modern challenges to the classic layout. More recently, in 2021, the club engaged architect Mike DeVries to restore many of the original features of the course with an eye towards recapturing the original charm of the layout. While not widely known on a national scale, Midlothian Country Club holds a significant place in the history of Chicago golf.
