LEATHERSTOCKING GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Cooperstown, NY, USA
Designed by Bob Cupp, Devereux Emmet
Leatherstocking Golf Course, carved into the rolling hills overlooking Otsego Lake near Cooperstown, echoes with the spirit of James Fenimore Cooper's tales. The 1909 design, a testament to the early days of American golf course architecture, presents a classic parkland experience, demanding strategic shot-making rather than brute force. While relatively short by modern standards, tight fairways framed by mature trees, and deceptively contoured greens reward accuracy and course management. A gentle dogleg here, a blind shot there – Leatherstocking requires a thoughtful approach on every hole.
Originally designed by Devereux Emmet, whose portfolio also includes iconic courses such as Congressional Country Club, Leatherstocking has seen subtle refinements over the years, preserving its classic character. The course's charm lies in its subtle challenges and breathtaking views.
Leatherstocking isn't about chasing accolades, but rather a celebration of the game's rich history and the camaraderie it fosters. Its membership, often drawn from the local community and passionate golfers who relish a true test of skill, value the course's unpretentious atmosphere and enduring appeal. Stories abound of matches decided on the sloping 18th green, the echoes of laughter and friendly wagers lingering in the crisp upstate air long after the final putt drops. And while post-round libations are savored, the club’s reputation rests more on the quality of its traditional fare, including their famed chicken pot pie, a comforting indulgence after a challenging round.
Reviews
Played early one morning on my way to Baseball Hall of Fame (Some day Roger Maris will get in!) Great Walk - Some of the nicest fairways I’ve ever played - 18 you tee off out in the lake and dog leg around back up to the old hotel
