Lake Windsor Course
Windsor, WI, USA

Lake Windsor Golf Club sits in the rolling farmland of south-central Wisconsin, approximately fifteen miles northeast of Madison. Designed by Marvin Busse and opened in the mid-1960s, the course reflects the straightforward parkland style common to upper Midwest daily-fee and semi-private facilities of that era. Busse, who worked primarily in Wisconsin and Illinois during the post-war golf boom, created layouts that emphasized playability for a wide range of golfers while incorporating the natural terrain features available on each site. The routing at Lake Windsor makes use of gentle elevation changes and mature tree lines that frame many holes. Water comes into play on several holes, including the namesake lake that influences strategy on the back nine. The layout typically features mid-length par fours, reachable par fives, and a mix of short and mid-length par threes. Bunkering tends toward traditional placement around greens and at landing zones, with putting surfaces that offer moderate undulation. The club serves the Windsor community and draws golfers from the greater Madison area. The course provides a representative example of regional golf architecture from the 1960s, with conditioning and maintenance standards typical of Wisconsin public-access facilities. The setting offers views across open agricultural land interspersed with wooded corridors, characteristic of Dane County's landscape.
This is the ultimate what could it really be like course. They got rid (or effectively sold the land) of 9 holes several years ago and did a revamp of the course. Again this could really be a hidden gem of a course with the Yahara River shaping many of the holes, but it seems like the course just never has materialized into what it could be.
