Lake Wilderness Golf Course

Lake Wilderness Golf Course occupies rolling terrain in Maple Valley, a suburban community roughly twenty-five miles southeast of Seattle in the foothills of the Cascade Range. Designed by Ray Coleman and opened in the early 1970s, the course was developed as a public facility serving the growing population of south King County. Coleman, a Pacific Northwest architect active during the region's mid-century golf expansion, routed the layout across terrain that features moderate elevation changes and stands of Douglas fir and cedar typical of western Washington forests. The course plays through a mix of open and tree-lined corridors, with several holes incorporating water features that reflect the area's natural wetlands and the namesake lake nearby. The routing takes advantage of the property's topography to create variety in hole character, with some holes playing uphill or downhill and others offering relatively flat lies. Greens are generally modest in size and contour, consistent with public course design standards of the era. Lake Wilderness serves primarily as a neighborhood course for recreational golfers in the Maple Valley area and the broader south King County region. The facility includes practice areas and a clubhouse typical of municipal-style operations. The course provides an accessible option for everyday play in a setting that preserves some of the wooded, rolling character of the Puget Sound lowlands before they transition to the Cascade foothills further east.
