Lake of Egypt Country Club occupies rolling terrain along the shores of its namesake reservoir in southern Illinois, approximately ten miles south of Marion. The course was developed as part of a residential community surrounding the 2,300-acre lake, which was created in the 1960s as a cooling reservoir for a power plant. The layout takes advantage of the natural topography characteristic of this region, where wooded hills meet the lake's irregular shoreline. The routing incorporates water on several holes, with the lake itself coming into play on portions of the course that run closest to the shore. Elevation changes are moderate but meaningful, typical of southern Illinois terrain where the landscape transitions between the flat plains to the north and the more varied topography approaching the Shawnee Hills. Tree-lined fairways define most holes, with hardwoods providing both visual framing and strategic challenge. The club serves as a recreational and social center for the Lake of Egypt residential community and surrounding area. Like many courses built around reservoir developments in the latter twentieth century, it combines golf with other lake-oriented activities, and the clubhouse functions as a gathering place for members throughout the year. The course provides a regional option for golfers in southern Illinois, an area with fewer courses per capita than the Chicago metropolitan region to the north.
