Le Golf National

L'Albatros at Le Golf National in Guyancourt, located southwest of Paris in the Île-de-France region, was designed by Hubert Chesneau and opened in 1990 as part of the larger Le Golf National complex. The course was conceived as France's national golf center and serves as the headquarters of the French Golf Federation. Chesneau, working with Didier Fruchet and Robert Von Hagge on the overall site, created L'Albatros as the flagship championship layout, built on relatively flat terrain that was transformed through extensive earthmoving to create dramatic contours, water features, and stadium-style viewing areas. The course is characterized by its modern, target-style design with generous fairways bordered by severe rough, numerous water hazards, and large, undulating greens. The routing incorporates several risk-reward holes and strategic bunkering, with water coming into play on multiple holes throughout the round. The layout's most distinctive feature is its amphitheater design, particularly evident on the closing stretch, where spectator mounds surround key holes to accommodate large tournament galleries. L'Albatros gained international prominence by hosting the Ryder Cup in 2018, the first time the matches were held in continental Europe. The course regularly hosts the Open de France on the DP World Tour and has been modified over the years to increase its championship credentials. The facility's role as France's national golf center gives it a semi-public character, with the course accessible to visitors while maintaining its status as a premier competitive venue.
