Houston Country Club

Houston Country Club, located in the Memorial area of Houston, Texas, occupies a wooded site along Buffalo Bayou. Robert Trent Jones designed the current course, which opened in 1954 when the club relocated from its original downtown location. The layout represents Jones's characteristic mid-century approach, with strategic bunkering, large greens with subtle internal contours, and water hazards that come into play on several holes. The routing takes advantage of the property's mature pine and hardwood trees, creating defined corridors and a parkland atmosphere uncommon in the Houston area's generally flat coastal plain. The course has hosted significant competitive golf, most notably the 1969 U.S. Open won by Orville Moody. That championship remains notable in Open history as Moody, a former Army sergeant with limited tour experience, defeated a field that included many of the era's top professionals. The club also hosted the 2020 U.S. Women's Open, won by A Lim Kim in a dramatic finish. These championships required course modifications and adjustments to meet modern championship standards while preserving Jones's design principles. Houston Country Club maintains a traditional private club culture with a membership drawn from Houston's business and professional communities. The club's facilities include tennis courts and a clubhouse that serves as a social center for members. The course itself plays to different yardages depending on tee selection, with Jones's design philosophy of risk-reward options and strategic variety evident throughout the round.
