PINE FOREST COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Houston, TX, USA
Designed by Jay Riviere, Carlton Gipson

Pine Forest Country Club's Green/Gold combination draws from the club's 27-hole layout designed by Jay Riviere and Carlton Gipson. The facility opened in the 1960s during Houston's suburban expansion, when the city's growing population supported numerous private clubs in the wooded areas west and north of downtown. Riviere, who worked extensively across Texas and the Gulf Coast, often collaborated with Gipson on projects that emphasized playability for a broad membership while incorporating the natural terrain.
The course occupies gently rolling terrain typical of the Houston area, with mature pine and hardwood trees defining corridors and framing holes. The routing likely features moderate elevation changes by local standards, with several holes playing through tree-lined fairways where accuracy off the tee matters more than distance. Water hazards—ponds or drainage features common to the region's clay soils and flat topography—come into play on multiple holes, requiring strategic decisions on approach shots.
The Green and Gold nines combine to create a layout that balances risk-reward opportunities with straightforward holes, reflecting the design philosophy of the era when member enjoyment and pace of play were primary considerations. Bermuda grass covers fairways and greens, standard for Houston's humid subtropical climate. The club serves as a traditional family-oriented country club, offering golf alongside social and recreational amenities typical of established Houston private clubs from this period.
Reviews
Challenging and fun course. Greens were undulating and QUICK. Biggest thing for me is pace of play, so to finish 18 holes in 3 hours and 15 mins on a late Friday morning was phenomenal. Will hopefully make this a more regular part of my rotation
One of my favorite clubs. Once played 45 times in 53 days. Love the 3-9s layout. Helps with pace of play. Short, easy, but can be punishing in key areas. Love love love PF. This will stand as my review for all 3 courses.
