Gray Course
Columbus, OH, USA

Ohio State University Golf Club's Gray Course, a Columbus fixture for nearly a century, is where countless Buckeyes have honed their game and learned the traditions of golf. Carved from relatively flat, parkland terrain, the course, while not dramatic in elevation change, presents a strategic test demanding precise shot-making. Don’t expect to bomb it off the tee here, you’ll need to strategically place the ball in the fairway in the correct spots to get to certain pins. Many holes feature subtle doglegs and strategically placed bunkers, favoring players who can shape the ball. It's a thinking-man's course, rewarding course management over sheer power. Originally designed by the esteemed Alister MacKenzie, known for his work at Augusta National and Cypress Point, the Gray Course embodies his strategic design principles, emphasizing challenging angles and nuanced green complexes. While not having hosted any major professional championships, the course has been a consistent site for collegiate and amateur events, serving as a proving ground for future stars. Many believe it still maintains the essence of MacKenzie's original vision through careful stewardship. The Gray Course, while not a global headliner, holds a special place in the heart of Ohio State University alumni and the Columbus golfing community. Its relatively accessible nature makes it enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels.

Gray is a great "easy" or beginner golf course. As a 36 hole facility with Scarlet there is something for everyone. It could use one more tee box back on a few holes but even playing here with irons only is a fun way to get around. The green complexes lack a ton of interest or variety, however it scratches the itch when Scarlet is not an option.
