Gangarru is one of two championship courses at Riverside Oaks Golf Club, situated in the semi-rural Cattai district northwest of Sydney. Designed by Peter Thomson, Michael Wolveridge, Ross Perrett, and Lloyd Williams, the course opened in the mid-1990s as part of a residential golf development along the Hawkesbury River valley. The design team, led by five-time Open Championship winner Thomson and his longtime collaborators, created a layout that works with the natural undulations and vegetation of the Australian landscape. The course occupies gently rolling terrain with native eucalyptus stands and open corridors that define the playing areas. The routing takes advantage of elevation changes to create variety in shot requirements and visual interest, with several holes offering views across the surrounding countryside. Water features come into play on multiple holes, reflecting the property's proximity to the Hawkesbury River system. The design philosophy emphasizes strategic options rather than penal hazards, characteristic of Thomson's approach to course architecture. Gangarru shares the Riverside Oaks facility with the Bungool course, providing members and visitors with 36 holes of golf in a setting that balances residential development with preserved natural areas. The club operates as a semi-private facility, hosting member play alongside public access. The course serves the growing northwest Sydney golf market, offering a parkland-style experience within reasonable distance of the metropolitan area while maintaining a more spacious, rural character than courses closer to the city center.
