Founders at Greystone Golf & Country Club

The Founders Course at Greystone Golf & Country Club represents a collaboration between architect Bob Cupp and PGA Tour professional Hubert Green, who grew up in Birmingham and won the 1977 U.S. Open and 1985 PGA Championship. Opened in the mid-1990s as part of a larger residential development in the rolling terrain northeast of Birmingham, the course takes advantage of the natural topography characteristic of the southern Appalachian foothills. The design incorporates elevation changes and wooded corridors typical of the region, with fairways carved through mature hardwoods and pines.

Cupp, who worked extensively with Jack Nicklaus before establishing his own practice, brought a strategic sensibility to the routing, creating holes that reward thoughtful course management over pure power. Green's input as a player who understood competitive golf added practical tournament considerations to the design. The course features generous landing areas off the tee balanced by well-defended greens that require precision on approach shots. Water comes into play on several holes, and the bunkering style reflects the era's emphasis on both visual definition and strategic challenge.

Greystone operates as a private club serving Birmingham's eastern suburbs, with the Founders Course complemented by a second eighteen holes on the property. The facility has hosted regional amateur competitions and serves as a centerpiece for the residential community that developed around it during Birmingham's suburban expansion in the 1990s.
