Hermanus Golf Club

The Hermanus Golf Club sits along the dramatic coastline of Walker Bay in the Western Cape, approximately 120 kilometers southeast of Cape Town. The club operates two nines—the East and South courses—that can be combined in various eighteen-hole configurations. Robert Grimsdell laid out the original course in the 1920s, with Peter Matkovich contributing redesign work in later decades to modernize the layout and routing. The East/South combination presents a links-style test shaped by coastal winds and ocean proximity. Several holes run along clifftops and elevated ground overlooking the bay, while others move through more sheltered valleys and indigenous fynbos vegetation characteristic of the Cape Floral Kingdom. The terrain features natural undulation and rocky outcroppings, with fairways that firm up considerably during the dry summer months. Wind direction and intensity vary significantly, often determining strategy and club selection more than yardage alone. Hermanus itself is known as a whale-watching destination, and the course offers views across Walker Bay during the southern right whale season from June through November. The club maintains a traditional members' culture while welcoming visitors, and the routing allows golfers to experience both the exposed coastal character and the more protected inland holes. The combination of ocean vistas, indigenous vegetation, and variable wind conditions creates a distinctly South African coastal golf experience that differs markedly from the parkland courses found around Johannesburg and Pretoria.
