EAST SUSSEX NATIONAL HOTEL & RESORT
🏴 Uckfield, East Sussex, England
Designed by Bob Cupp
The East Course at East Sussex National Hotel & Resort opened in 1990 as part of Bob Cupp's ambitious design project on a former estate near Uckfield. Cupp, who worked extensively with Jack Nicklaus before establishing his own practice, created two championship-length courses on gently rolling Sussex countryside. The East Course stretches over 7,100 yards from the back tees and features the bold, strategic design elements characteristic of American target golf translated to an English setting. The layout incorporates substantial earthmoving that shaped dramatic contours, elevated tees, and large, undulating greens defended by deep bunkering.
The course occupies parkland terrain with mature trees framing many holes, though the design opens up in places to reveal views across the Sussex Weald. Water hazards come into play on several holes, and the bunkering style—both greenside and fairway—reflects Cupp's preference for deep, sculptured sand complexes that demand precision. The greens are notably large and feature significant internal movement, making approach shot placement and putting critical to scoring.
East Sussex National has hosted numerous professional events, including multiple European Tour tournaments in the 1990s and 2000s. The facility operates as a hotel and resort, making both courses accessible to visitors. The East Course generally plays as the more demanding of the two layouts, with length, forced carries, and green complexity testing accomplished players while remaining playable for members and resort guests from appropriate tees.
