Cummaquid Course
Yarmouth Port, MA, USA

Cummaquid Golf Club occupies a quiet corner of Yarmouth Port on Cape Cod's north side, where the course was laid out by Henry C. Mitchell in the early twentieth century. Mitchell, a Massachusetts-based architect active in the region during that era, designed a layout that reflects the modest scale and straightforward character typical of Cape courses from that period. The property sits on relatively gentle terrain compared to the more dramatic coastal sites elsewhere on the peninsula, with the routing working through wooded corridors and open stretches that define the playing corridors. The course measures short by contemporary standards, a reflection of both its vintage and the practical constraints of its setting. Mature trees frame many holes, and the design relies on strategic bunkering and green contours rather than length to test players. The layout presents a traditional Cape Cod golf experience, where accuracy and course management matter more than distance. Several holes play along or across natural drainage patterns that add interest to club selection and approach strategy. Cummaquid functions as a semi-private facility, serving both members and outside play during the season. The club maintains the unpretentious atmosphere common to many older Cape courses, where golf remains the primary focus and the setting emphasizes the natural Cape landscape rather than elaborate amenities. The course provides a window into early New England golf design, preserving the scale and character of the era when Mitchell and his contemporaries were shaping the region's golfing landscape.
