Crystal Falls, carved into the rolling Texas Hill Country just outside Austin, is defined by its elevation changes and the namesake limestone outcroppings that punctuate the landscape. A product of the late 20th-century golf boom, this semi-private club offers a playable, if occasionally challenging, layout. Designed by Pete Dye protege, Craig Stadler and Dave Bennett in 1992, Crystal Falls sprawls across terrain more reminiscent of the Carolinas than the stereotypical Texas flatlands. Generous fairways encourage aggressive play, but strategic bunkering and the ever-present risk of finding a water hazard – or a rocky ravine – keeps players honest. Its bentgrass greens are considered to be some of the best in the area. The back tees offer considerable length, but the course is eminently playable for all skill levels. While Crystal Falls hasn’t hosted any significant professional tournaments, it remains a popular local fixture for area golfers. The club fosters a friendly atmosphere with a notable Thursday night social scene.
