Stackstown Golf Club

Stackstown Golf Club sits in the foothills of the Dublin Mountains in Rathfarnham, on the southern edge of Dublin city. The club was established in 1975 on land that rises steadily from the lower parkland sections into more exposed upland terrain, offering views across the city and Dublin Bay. Eddie Shaftrey, an Irish golf architect active in the mid-to-late twentieth century, designed the course to work with the natural contours and elevation changes of the site. The routing moves through varied topography, with the front nine generally occupying lower ground characterized by tree-lined fairways and more sheltered playing corridors, while the back nine climbs into hillier, more open country where wind becomes a greater factor. The elevation gain throughout the round creates both strategic interest and physical challenge, with several holes playing significantly uphill or downhill. The natural landscape provides a mix of parkland and heathland characteristics, and the course requires thoughtful club selection and course management given the slopes and changing conditions at altitude. Stackstown operates as a members' club and serves the local golfing community in south Dublin. The course has developed a reputation as a solid test of golf that rewards local knowledge, particularly in managing the wind and reading the sloped greens. The club maintains an active membership and hosts regular competitions throughout the season.
