Coal Creek occupies the lower elevation of the two courses at the Golf Club at Newcastle, positioned on the hillside east of Seattle with views across Lake Washington toward the city skyline and the Olympic Mountains. Designed by Bob Cupp with input from Fred Couples and opened in 1999, the course shares the property's dramatic topography but offers a somewhat different character than its companion China Creek layout. The routing works through dense stands of Douglas fir and features significant elevation changes, though generally less severe than those found on the upper course.

The design emphasizes strategic variety over pure length, with Cupp creating holes that reward thoughtful placement and course management. Several holes play along natural ridgelines and through forested corridors, while others open to broader views of the surrounding landscape. The greens feature moderate to bold contours typical of Cupp's work, and the bunkering style reflects the naturalistic aesthetic he developed throughout his career. Water comes into play on select holes, adding tactical considerations to club selection and approach angles.

The Golf Club at Newcastle operates as a daily-fee facility, unusual for a property of this scale and ambition in the Seattle market. Both courses have hosted regional amateur competitions and qualify for various national course rankings. The clubhouse sits between the two layouts and takes advantage of the site's western exposure, offering dining and event spaces that overlook the Puget Sound basin.
