GOLF CLUB AT NEWCASTLE
🇺🇸 Newcastle, WA, USA
Designed by Bob Cupp
China Creek occupies the northern half of the Golf Club at Newcastle's dual-course property in the Cascade foothills east of Seattle. Bob Cupp designed both layouts here in the late 1990s, carving them from dense Pacific Northwest forest with dramatic elevation changes and views across Lake Washington toward the Seattle skyline and Olympic Mountains. The site's steep terrain and natural ravines shape the routing, with several holes playing across or along the property's significant topographic features.
The course moves through corridors of Douglas fir and cedar, with fairways that often tilt and tumble along the hillside contours. Cupp's design incorporates the natural drainage patterns and wooded edges, creating a routing that feels integrated into the landscape rather than imposed upon it. Elevation shifts between holes can be substantial, and the views from higher points extend west toward the water and mountains when weather permits.
China Creek generally plays as the more forgiving of Newcastle's two courses, though the terrain still demands accurate placement and course management. The conditioning reflects the club's resort-oriented operation, which hosts both members and daily-fee play. The facility serves the Seattle metropolitan area's golf market with a mountain-adjacent setting that remains accessible from the city, and the clubhouse provides dining and event space with the same westward views that characterize several holes on the course.
