Ladera Golf Club

Ladera Golf Club sits in the western foothills of Albuquerque, occupying high desert terrain that overlooks the Rio Grande Valley and the city below. Dick Phelps designed the course, which opened in the early 1990s as part of a residential community development. The routing takes advantage of the natural elevation changes and volcanic rock outcroppings characteristic of this part of New Mexico, with fairways that move through arroyos and across mesas typical of the region's topography. The layout reflects the target-style design approach common to desert courses of that era, where defined landing areas are carved from native scrub and rock. Elevation shifts create visual interest and affect club selection, particularly on approach shots where the thin air at Albuquerque's mile-high altitude already influences ball flight. The course incorporates the natural desert vegetation—chamisa, cholla, and juniper—as both hazard and landscape element. Ladera operates as a semi-private facility, serving both members and daily-fee players. The setting provides views westward toward the extinct volcanoes of Petroglyph National Monument and eastward to the Sandia Mountains, placing the course within Albuquerque's distinctive high desert basin geography.
