Kuki'o Golf and Beach Club

The Championship Course at Kuki'o Golf and Beach Club occupies a dramatic stretch of the Kona Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. Tom Fazio routed this layout across ancient lava fields, integrating the stark black volcanic rock into nearly every aspect of the design. The course sits at relatively low elevation near sea level, with the Pacific Ocean visible from multiple vantage points and the slopes of Hualalai volcano rising inland. Fazio's routing moves through corridors carved from the lava, with fairways of paspalum grass contrasting sharply against the dark stone. The design preserves much of the natural lava formations as hazards and visual elements, creating a golf experience distinct to this volcanic landscape. Several holes play directly along the coastline, where the terrain drops toward the ocean, while others move through more sheltered areas where native vegetation has established itself in pockets of soil among the rock. Kuki'o operates as a private residential club with limited membership, part of a larger resort community that includes beachfront amenities. The club maintains a low-profile presence consistent with other exclusive Big Island developments. The course opened in the mid-2000s as part of the property's master plan, representing one of Fazio's few Hawaiian designs. The layout emphasizes strategic options rather than extreme length, with the volcanic topography providing natural definition and challenge throughout the round.
