Bing Maloney Golf Course opened in 1952 as Sacramento's second municipal facility, designed by Michael McDonagh, a Northern California architect who worked on several public courses in the region during the mid-20th century. The course occupies rolling terrain in south Sacramento, offering a parkland-style layout that serves as an accessible championship-length test for the city's recreational golfers. The property features mature trees that frame fairways and define playing corridors, typical of California municipal designs from this era. The routing makes use of the natural elevation changes across the site, with several holes playing uphill or downhill and creating variety in stance and approach angles. Water comes into play on a few holes, and the bunkering follows traditional patterns around greens and strategic landing areas. At over 6,700 yards from the back tees, the course provides sufficient length for competitive play while remaining manageable for everyday golfers from forward tees. Bing Maloney has long served as a venue for local and regional amateur tournaments, functioning as a workhorse facility in Sacramento's public golf infrastructure. The course is named after Bing Maloney, a Sacramento native and sports editor who advocated for public recreation facilities in the city. It operates alongside Haggin Oaks and Bartley Cavanaugh as part of the municipal golf system, offering an affordable option for year-round play in the Central Valley's mild climate.
