Birchwood Course
Kieler, WI, USA

Birchwood Golf Course is a public facility located in Kieler, a small community in southwestern Wisconsin's Grant County, near the Mississippi River bluffs and the Illinois border. The course serves the tri-state area around Dubuque, Iowa, providing accessible golf in a region characterized by rolling agricultural land and wooded ridges typical of the Driftless Area, where glaciers bypassed the terrain and left more varied topography than much of the upper Midwest. The layout occupies land that transitions between open farmland and wooded sections, a common configuration for rural Wisconsin courses developed in the latter half of the twentieth century. Golfers encounter elevation changes and natural contours that add strategic interest to what is fundamentally a straightforward design suited to recreational play. Tree-lined fairways and modest greens reflect the practical design approach typical of community courses built to serve local populations rather than destination golfers. Birchwood functions primarily as a neighborhood course for residents of Kieler and surrounding towns, offering a relaxed atmosphere and unpretentious golf experience. The facility includes basic amenities consistent with small-town public courses throughout the region. Its location in Wisconsin's southwestern corner places it within the broader golfing landscape of the upper Mississippi River valley, where courses tend to emphasize playability and value over championship length or tournament pedigree.
This place is bonkers. There really is no website or any real information about this place anywhere. They might not even pick up the phone if you call for a tee time. It is a place where you just kind of show up and play. If you aren't a local you might not know it is even here. I believe at one point the plan was for a full 18 holes and development but maybe that is just part of the myth of the course. This is what I know from playing several times is that is just a fun and wild ride of a course. The two par 3 holes have a view that really is amazing and can't really be described.
