Applewood Course
Golden, CO, USA

Applewood Golf Course sits in Golden, Colorado, at the base of the foothills west of Denver. Designed by Press Maxwell and opened in 1957, the course occupies rolling terrain that transitions from the high plains into the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The layout takes advantage of natural elevation changes and draws, with views extending east toward the Denver metro area and west toward the foothills and mesas that define this part of Jefferson County. Maxwell, a prolific architect who designed numerous courses across the Mountain West and Great Plains during the mid-twentieth century, routed Applewood to work with the existing topography rather than impose dramatic earthmoving. The course features tree-lined fairways—primarily cottonwoods and scrub oak—and greens that reflect the straightforward design principles common to municipal and daily-fee courses of that era. The property experiences the semi-arid climate typical of Colorado's Front Range, with playing conditions influenced by altitude, wind, and seasonal moisture patterns. As a public facility, Applewood serves a broad cross-section of Denver-area golfers and visitors. The course has undergone periodic updates to maintain playability and accommodate modern equipment while preserving the essential character of Maxwell's original design. Its location in Golden, a city known for the Coors Brewery and the Colorado School of Mines, makes it accessible to both local residents and those exploring the western suburbs of the Denver metropolitan region.
