Ancil Hoffman Course
Carmichael, CA, USA

Ancil Hoffman Golf Course sits in Carmichael, a suburb northeast of Sacramento, within Ancil Hoffman Park along the American River Parkway. Designed by William Francis Bell and opened in 1965, the course occupies land that was part of the larger county park system dedicated to preserving open space along the river corridor. Bell, a prolific California architect active from the 1950s through the 1980s, designed numerous municipal and daily-fee courses throughout the state, typically creating accessible layouts that worked within natural terrain and budget constraints. The course plays through gently rolling terrain characteristic of the Sacramento Valley's river bottomlands, with mature trees—primarily oaks, cottonwoods, and sycamores—lining many fairways. The routing takes advantage of the parkland setting, with several holes running parallel to or near the American River, though the course itself sits on higher ground above the immediate floodplain. The layout features relatively straightforward holes that reward accuracy over distance, with tree-lined corridors defining playing angles and small to mid-sized greens that require solid approach play. As a Sacramento County facility, Ancil Hoffman serves as an accessible public course for the region, offering year-round play in the area's Mediterranean climate. The course shares its park setting with other recreational amenities and connects to the extensive American River trail system, making it part of the broader network of public spaces along one of the region's defining natural features.
