Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Club sits in the high-desert foothills of the Sandia Mountains east of Albuquerque, at an elevation exceeding 8,000 feet. Ken Dye designed the course, which opened in 2000 and takes advantage of the dramatic elevation changes and natural terrain characteristic of this pinyon-juniper landscape. The routing moves through arroyos and across ridgelines, with holes playing significantly uphill and downhill as the course navigates the property's rugged topography. The design incorporates the native vegetation and rock outcroppings into the playing corridors, and the elevation creates both strategic considerations and visual drama. Distance control becomes particularly important at this altitude, where the thin air affects ball flight noticeably. The course offers expansive views across the Rio Grande Valley toward the Jemez Mountains to the west and the Sandia Peak to the north. Paa-Ko Ridge operates as a daily-fee facility and has gained recognition in regional and national rankings for public-access courses in New Mexico. The combination of mountain setting, elevation, and desert landscape gives the course a character distinct from traditional parkland or links designs. The layout challenges players to manage both the natural terrain and the effects of high-altitude golf, where shots carry farther but controlling trajectory and spin becomes more difficult in the thinner atmosphere.
