Perry Maxwell

Perry Duke Maxwell (1879–1952) was an American golf course architect who became a founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and earned recognition as the "father of Oklahoma golf." His career spanned the Golden Age of golf architecture, producing a remarkable portfolio concentrated in the central United States but extending to acclaimed courses nationwide.

Maxwell's work is distinguished by strategic design and natural terrain integration. Among his most celebrated courses, Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Kansas, and Crystal Downs in Frankfort, Michigan, are frequently named among the most admired courses in the world. His Championship course at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa has hosted numerous major championships, while Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth became another prominent tournament venue. Maxwell also contributed significant work at Merion Golf Club's East course in Ardmore, Pennsylvania.

His Oklahoma legacy runs deep, with influential designs including Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club, Twin Hills, Dornick Hills, and numerous other courses throughout the state. Maxwell's reach extended across the Midwest and South, with notable work at courses like Old Town Club's Old North State layout in Winston-Salem, Saucon Valley's Old course in Pennsylvania, and Ohio State University's Scarlet course.
