Hugh Wilson

Hugh Irvine Wilson (1879–1925) was an American golf course architect best known for designing Merion Golf Club's East Course in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, one of the most celebrated layouts in American golf. A Princeton graduate and accomplished amateur golfer, Wilson was selected by Merion in 1910 to study great British courses before designing his first project. Though he had no prior design experience, his East Course—which opened in 1912—became an immediate classic and has hosted numerous USGA championships. The layout is widely admired for its strategic bunker placement and routing across a compact property.

Wilson also designed Merion's West Course and contributed to other notable Philadelphia-area courses including Cobbs Creek (Olde), Phoenixville Country Club, and Reading Country Club. His career was cut short by his untimely death in 1925 at age 46, but his influence on American course architecture—particularly his emphasis on natural strategy and thoughtful hazard placement—endures through his limited but highly regarded body of work.
