Herbert Strong

Herbert Bertram Strong (1880–1944) was an English professional golfer who became a founding member and organizer of the PGA of America before transitioning to a prolific career in golf course architecture. As a player, his best major championship result was ninth place at the 1913 U.S. Open, but his lasting impact came through his design work across the eastern United States.

Strong's architectural portfolio concentrated heavily in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, with notable layouts including the Old Course at Saucon Valley Country Club in Pennsylvania and Canterbury Golf Club in Ohio. His work extended from Maine's Northeast Harbor Golf Club south to multiple Florida designs, including Vero Beach Country Club and Rio Mar Country Club. He also created courses in the New York metropolitan area such as Metropolis Country Club and Engineers Country Club, along with layouts in Maryland, West Virginia, and New Jersey.

His designs reflect the strategic thinking of the Golden Age of golf architecture, when former professionals brought playing experience to their course construction work.
