Henry Cotton

Thomas Henry Cotton was a three-time Open Championship winner and the dominant British golfer of his era. Born in 1907, he captured the Claret Jug in 1934, 1937, and 1948 at a time when American players had come to dominate the tournament. His dedication to practice and technical precision set new standards for professional golf, and he was later knighted for his contributions to the sport.

Beyond his playing career, Cotton became a prolific course designer whose work spanned Britain and continental Europe. His portfolio included thoughtful revisions to established courses such as Royal Cinque Ports and La Moye in Jersey, alongside new layouts at Penina in Portugal — the Sir Henry Cotton Championship course — and projects in France including du Château and La Bretesche. From Stirling and Palacerigg in Scotland to Benamor and other courses in the Algarve, his designs reflected both strategic thinking and an understanding of the playing qualities he valued as a championship competitor.

Cotton's influence extended through teaching, writing, and his role in elevating the status of the professional golfer. He died in 1987.
