George Arthur Crump (1871–1918) was a Philadelphia hotelier who became one of golf architecture's most singular figures through the creation of Pine Valley Golf Club. Though he designed only one course, its extraordinary influence established him as a central member of the "Philadelphia School" alongside contemporaries such as A.W. Tillinghast, George C. Thomas Jr., Hugh Wilson, and William Flynn.
Crump devoted the final years of his life to building Pine Valley on a remote tract of sandy New Jersey pine barrens. The project consumed his fortune and attention; he lived on-site in a bungalow during construction, obsessively refining each hole. He died in 1918 before the course was completed, and his friend Hugh Wilson finished the final holes according to Crump's plans.
Pine Valley opened to immediate acclaim and remains one of the most revered courses in the world. Its dramatic design—featuring vast carries over sandy waste areas, strategic bunkering, and isolated greens—challenged conventions and influenced generations of architects. Golf Digest currently ranks it number one among America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses, a position it has held repeatedly over decades.
