Charles Hugh Alison (1883–1952) was a British golf course architect who established himself as one of the craft's most accomplished designers during the Golden Age. Working primarily alongside Harry Colt and John Morrison—the trio formalized their partnership as Colt, Alison & Morrison Ltd. in 1928—Alison also collaborated with Alister MacKenzie on select projects. His career took him across continents, leaving enduring designs throughout Europe, Asia, and North America.
Alison's American portfolio includes Milwaukee Country Club, Kirtland Country Club, and Davenport Country Club—all courses that rank highly for strategic design and enduring playability. His work at County Sligo (the Colt course) in Ireland and courses across Japan, including the Fuji course at Kawana Hotel and the East course at Kasumigaseki Country Club, demonstrates his global reach. He also designed Seaside at Sea Island Resort in Georgia and contributed to numerous clubs in the Midwest and Northeast.
Alison's approach favored thoughtful routing, naturalistic bunkering, and greens that rewarded precision, characteristics that have allowed his designs to remain relevant nearly a century later.
