Woodholme at Woodholme Country Club

Woodholme Country Club sits in Pikesville, a suburb northwest of Baltimore, and traces its origins to 1898, making it one of Maryland's oldest clubs. The current course was designed by Herbert Strong and opened in 1926, replacing an earlier layout. Strong, a prolific architect of the 1920s who worked extensively in the Mid-Atlantic region, routed the course over rolling terrain characteristic of the Piedmont landscape, with mature tree-lined fairways and elevation changes that add strategic interest to the layout.

The course occupies wooded, suburban property with holes moving through corridors of hardwoods and over gentle ridges. Strong's design reflects the strategic principles of the Golden Age, emphasizing thoughtful placement over length and incorporating natural contours into green complexes and hazard positioning. The routing takes advantage of the property's topography, with several holes playing uphill or downhill and greens set into slopes that require careful approach work.

Woodholme has served as a significant venue in regional golf, hosting numerous Maryland State Golf Association championships and other amateur competitions over the decades. The club maintains a traditional private club atmosphere, with a membership drawn largely from the Baltimore area's established Jewish community—a historical distinction among American country clubs. The clubhouse and grounds reflect the club's long history, and the course remains a well-regarded test among Baltimore-area layouts, valued for its mature character and Strong's enduring design principles.
