Woodberry Course

Woodberry Forest Golf Course occupies a scenic hillside setting in Madison County, Virginia, roughly twenty miles north of Charlottesville in the rolling Piedmont countryside. The course was designed by Donald Ross and serves the Woodberry Forest School, a private preparatory boarding school for boys founded in 1889. Ross's work here dates to the early twentieth century, part of his prolific period designing courses throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. The layout reflects Ross's characteristic approach to working with natural terrain. The course moves across gently rolling land with elevation changes that create variety in stance and shot requirements. Greens exhibit the subtle contouring and strategic bunkering typical of Ross's designs, rewarding accurate approach play and thoughtful course management. The routing takes advantage of the property's wooded corridors and open meadow areas, providing a mix of hole types and visual interest throughout the round. As a school course, Woodberry Forest serves primarily the students, faculty, and alumni of Woodberry Forest School, along with their guests. The facility functions as both a competitive venue for the school's golf program and a recreational amenity within the broader campus environment. The course maintains the traditional character of a Ross design while fulfilling its educational and community role, offering a walking-friendly layout that emphasizes shot-making and course knowledge over length. The setting provides a quiet, pastoral round removed from commercial golf development.

Tight fun track. Smallest greens in the world. But more challenging than you might think at first blush. All three par 3s are tricky or long. Both par 5s (7 and 8) are short but tiny greens. Beautiful views throughout!
