MAUNA LANI RESORT GOLF
🇺🇸 Kohala Coast, HI, USA
Designed by H. Flint, R. F. Cain, Robin Nelson
WikiWiki at Mauna Lani Resort Golf is where the spirit of aloha meets strategic play, a constant trade wind sculpting both ball flight and the golfer's approach. Hewn from the stark, black lava fields of the Kohala Coast, this late 20th-century resort course presents a striking visual contrast, its emerald fairways a vibrant oasis against the volcanic landscape.
Designed by Nelson & Wright, the WikiWiki Course presents a deceptively gentle challenge. While visually open, swirling winds and strategically placed bunkers demand thoughtful club selection and precise execution. Approach shots often play shorter than they appear, thanks to the ever-present downwind conditions, favoring players who can control trajectory and spin. It's a second course to the better known Francis I’i Brown North and South courses, and named after their popular WikiWiki shuttle.
While not a championship venue, WikiWiki fosters a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere, appealing to both resort guests and local players seeking a more casual, yet still rewarding, golf experience. After a round, many players gather at the snack bar, known for its surprisingly elevated pupu (appetizers) and the ice-cold local brews, often swapping stories about the ever-changing conditions and the occasional errant shot swallowed by the unforgiving lava.
